How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 77 = 61.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 61.6 ÷ 77 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/77, so part = 80 × 77 ÷ 100 = 61.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*77. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

61.6 is the 80% share of 77. The remaining 20% is 15.4, and the two parts add back up to 77.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $77 saves $61.6, so you pay $15.4.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 77 by 80% gives 138.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 15.4. These do not cancel out: raising 77 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 27.72, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
