How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 97 = 77.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 77.6 ÷ 97 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/97, so part = 80 × 97 ÷ 100 = 77.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*97. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

77.6 is the 80% share of 97. The remaining 20% is 19.4, and the two parts add back up to 97.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $97 saves $77.6, so you pay $19.4.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 97 by 80% gives 174.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 19.4. These do not cancel out: raising 97 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 34.92, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
