How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 81 ÷ 100 = 0.81
- Multiply: 0.81 × 1 = 0.81
- Check: Work backwards: 0.81 ÷ 1 × 100 = 81%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 81/100 = part/1, so part = 81 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.81. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =81%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.81 is the 81% share of 1. The remaining 19% is 0.19, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 81% off an item priced $1 saves $0.81, so you pay $0.19.
Adding and taking away 81%
Increasing 1 by 81% gives 1.81 and decreasing it by 81% gives 0.19. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 81% and then lowering the result by 81% ends at 0.3439, because the second 81% is taken of a bigger number.
