How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 81 ÷ 100 = 0.81
  2. Multiply: 0.81 × 25 = 20.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 81%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 81/100 = part/25, so part = 81 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =81%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.25 is the 81% share of 25. The remaining 19% is 4.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 81% off an item priced $25 saves $20.25, so you pay $4.75.

Adding and taking away 81%

Increasing 25 by 81% gives 45.25 and decreasing it by 81% gives 4.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 81% and then lowering the result by 81% ends at 8.5975, because the second 81% is taken of a bigger number.
