How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 83 ÷ 100 = 0.83
  2. Multiply: 0.83 × 50 = 41.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 41.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 83%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 83/100 = part/50, so part = 83 × 50 ÷ 100 = 41.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =83%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

41.5 is the 83% share of 50. The remaining 17% is 8.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 83% off an item priced $50 saves $41.5, so you pay $8.5.

Adding and taking away 83%

Increasing 50 by 83% gives 91.5 and decreasing it by 83% gives 8.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 83% and then lowering the result by 83% ends at 15.555, because the second 83% is taken of a bigger number.
