How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 84 ÷ 100 = 0.84
  2. Multiply: 0.84 × 50 = 42
  3. Check: Work backwards: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 84/100 = part/50, so part = 84 × 50 ÷ 100 = 42. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =84%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

42 is the 84% share of 50. The remaining 16% is 8, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 84% off an item priced $50 saves $42, so you pay $8.

Adding and taking away 84%

Increasing 50 by 84% gives 92 and decreasing it by 84% gives 8. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 84% and then lowering the result by 84% ends at 14.72, because the second 84% is taken of a bigger number.
