How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 88 ÷ 100 = 0.88
  2. Multiply: 0.88 × 45 = 39.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 39.6 ÷ 45 × 100 = 88%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 88/100 = part/45, so part = 88 × 45 ÷ 100 = 39.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =88%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

39.6 is the 88% share of 45. The remaining 12% is 5.4, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 88% off an item priced $45 saves $39.6, so you pay $5.4.

Adding and taking away 88%

Increasing 45 by 88% gives 84.6 and decreasing it by 88% gives 5.4. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 88% and then lowering the result by 88% ends at 10.152, because the second 88% is taken of a bigger number.
