How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 88 ÷ 100 = 0.88
  2. Multiply: 0.88 × 50 = 44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44 ÷ 50 × 100 = 88%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 88/100 = part/50, so part = 88 × 50 ÷ 100 = 44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =88%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44 is the 88% share of 50. The remaining 12% is 6, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 88% off an item priced $50 saves $44, so you pay $6.

Adding and taking away 88%

Increasing 50 by 88% gives 94 and decreasing it by 88% gives 6. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 88% and then lowering the result by 88% ends at 11.28, because the second 88% is taken of a bigger number.
