How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 89 ÷ 100 = 0.89
  2. Multiply: 0.89 × 90 = 80.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 80.1 ÷ 90 × 100 = 89%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 89/100 = part/90, so part = 89 × 90 ÷ 100 = 80.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =89%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

80.1 is the 89% share of 90. The remaining 11% is 9.9, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 89% off an item priced $90 saves $80.1, so you pay $9.9.

Adding and taking away 89%

Increasing 90 by 89% gives 170.1 and decreasing it by 89% gives 9.9. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 89% and then lowering the result by 89% ends at 18.711, because the second 89% is taken of a bigger number.
