How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 20 = 1.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/20, so part = 9 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.8 is the 9% share of 20. The remaining 91% is 18.2, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $20 saves $1.8, so you pay $18.2.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 20 by 9% gives 21.8 and decreasing it by 9% gives 18.2. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 19.838, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 9. 9% of 20 and 20% of 9 are always equal (both are 9 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
