How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 64 = 5.76
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.76 ÷ 64 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/64, so part = 9 × 64 ÷ 100 = 5.76. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.76 is the 9% share of 64. The remaining 91% is 58.24, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $64 saves $5.76, so you pay $58.24.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 64 by 9% gives 69.76 and decreasing it by 9% gives 58.24. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 63.4816, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
