How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 93 ÷ 100 = 0.93
  2. Multiply: 0.93 × 40 = 37.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 93%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 93/100 = part/40, so part = 93 × 40 ÷ 100 = 37.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =93%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37.2 is the 93% share of 40. The remaining 7% is 2.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 93% off an item priced $40 saves $37.2, so you pay $2.8.

Adding and taking away 93%

Increasing 40 by 93% gives 77.2 and decreasing it by 93% gives 2.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 93% and then lowering the result by 93% ends at 5.404, because the second 93% is taken of a bigger number.
