How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
  2. Multiply: 0.95 × 100 = 95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 95 ÷ 100 × 100 = 95%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/100, so part = 95 × 100 ÷ 100 = 95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =95%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

95 is the 95% share of 100. The remaining 5% is 5, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 95% off an item priced $100 saves $95, so you pay $5.

Adding and taking away 95%

Increasing 100 by 95% gives 195 and decreasing it by 95% gives 5. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 9.75, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.
