How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 96 ÷ 100 = 0.96
  2. Multiply: 0.96 × 50 = 48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48 ÷ 50 × 100 = 96%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 96/100 = part/50, so part = 96 × 50 ÷ 100 = 48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =96%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48 is the 96% share of 50. The remaining 4% is 2, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 96% off an item priced $50 saves $48, so you pay $2.

Adding and taking away 96%

Increasing 50 by 96% gives 98 and decreasing it by 96% gives 2. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 96% and then lowering the result by 96% ends at 3.92, because the second 96% is taken of a bigger number.
