How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 100 = 98
  3. Check: Work backwards: 98 ÷ 100 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/100, so part = 98 × 100 ÷ 100 = 98. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

98 is the 98% share of 100. The remaining 2% is 2, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $100 saves $98, so you pay $2.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 100 by 98% gives 198 and decreasing it by 98% gives 2. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 3.96, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
