How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 100 = 99
  3. Check: Work backwards: 99 ÷ 100 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/100, so part = 99 × 100 ÷ 100 = 99. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

99 is the 99% share of 100. The remaining 1% is 1, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $100 saves $99, so you pay $1.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 100 by 99% gives 199 and decreasing it by 99% gives 1. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 1.99, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
