How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 20 = 19.8
- Check: Work backwards: 19.8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/20, so part = 99 × 20 ÷ 100 = 19.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
19.8 is the 99% share of 20. The remaining 1% is 0.2, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 99% off an item priced $20 saves $19.8, so you pay $0.2.
Adding and taking away 99%
Increasing 20 by 99% gives 39.8 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.2. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.398, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
