How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 3 = 2.97
- Check: Work backwards: 2.97 ÷ 3 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/3, so part = 99 × 3 ÷ 100 = 2.97. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.97 is the 99% share of 3. The remaining 1% is 0.03, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 99% off an item priced $3 saves $2.97, so you pay $0.03.
Adding and taking away 99%
Increasing 3 by 99% gives 5.97 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.03. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.0597, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
