How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 50 = 49.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 49.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/50, so part = 99 × 50 ÷ 100 = 49.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

49.5 is the 99% share of 50. The remaining 1% is 0.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $50 saves $49.5, so you pay $0.5.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 50 by 99% gives 99.5 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.995, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
