How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 20 ÷ 0.1 = 200
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 200 is 0.1 × 200 = 20.
Another method. As a proportion: 20/whole = 10/100, so whole = 20 × 100 ÷ 10 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
20 is the 10% share of 200. The other 90% is 180.
Discounts: if 20 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $200.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 10% is 20, then 1% is 20 ÷ 10 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
