How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Divide the part by it: 50 ÷ 0.1 = 500
  3. Check: Work forwards: 10% of 500 is 0.1 × 500 = 50.

Another method. As a proportion: 50/whole = 10/100, so whole = 50 × 100 ÷ 10 = 500. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

50 is the 10% share of 500. The other 90% is 450.

Discounts: if 50 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $500.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 10% is 50, then 1% is 50 ÷ 10 = 5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 50, 50% is 250 and 100% is 500.
