How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Divide the part by it: 15 ÷ 0.15 = 100
  3. Check: Work forwards: 15% of 100 is 0.15 × 100 = 15.

Another method. As a proportion: 15/whole = 15/100, so whole = 15 × 100 ÷ 15 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15/15%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

15 is the 15% share of 100. The other 85% is 85.

Discounts: if 15 dollars is a 15% saving, the original price was $100.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 15% is 15, then 1% is 15 ÷ 15 = 1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 10, 50% is 50 and 100% is 100.
