How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100
  3. Check: Work forwards: 60% of 100 is 0.6 × 100 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 60/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 60 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/60%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 60% share of 100. The other 40% is 40.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 60% saving, the original price was $100.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 60% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 60 = 1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 10, 50% is 50 and 100% is 100.
