How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Divide the part by it: 15 ÷ 0.1 = 150
  3. Check: Work forwards: 10% of 150 is 0.1 × 150 = 15.

Another method. As a proportion: 15/whole = 10/100, so whole = 15 × 100 ÷ 10 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

15 is the 10% share of 150. The other 90% is 135.

Discounts: if 15 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $150.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 10% is 15, then 1% is 15 ÷ 10 = 1.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 15, 50% is 75 and 100% is 150.
