How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Divide the part by it: 80 ÷ 0.4 = 200
- Check: Work forwards: 40% of 200 is 0.4 × 200 = 80.
Another method. As a proportion: 80/whole = 40/100, so whole = 80 × 100 ÷ 40 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80/40%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
80 is the 40% share of 200. The other 60% is 120.
Discounts: if 80 dollars is a 40% saving, the original price was $200.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 40% is 80, then 1% is 80 ÷ 40 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
