How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.05 = 800
  3. Check: Work forwards: 5% of 800 is 0.05 × 800 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 5/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 5 = 800. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

40 is the 5% share of 800. The other 95% is 760.

Discounts: if 40 dollars is a 5% saving, the original price was $800.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 5% is 40, then 1% is 40 ÷ 5 = 8, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 80, 50% is 400 and 100% is 800.
