How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 100 ÷ 0.5 = 200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 200 is 0.5 × 200 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion: 100/whole = 50/100, so whole = 100 × 100 ÷ 50 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

100 is the 50% share of 200. The other 50% is 100.

Discounts: if 100 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 100, then 1% is 100 ÷ 50 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
