How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.15 = 400
  3. Check: Work forwards: 15% of 400 is 0.15 × 400 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 15/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 15 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/15%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 15% share of 400. The other 85% is 340.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 15% saving, the original price was $400.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 15% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 15 = 4, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 40, 50% is 200 and 100% is 400.
