How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.8 = 50
  3. Check: Work forwards: 80% of 50 is 0.8 × 50 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 80/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 80 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/80%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

40 is the 80% share of 50. The other 20% is 10.

Discounts: if 40 dollars is a 80% saving, the original price was $50.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 80% is 40, then 1% is 40 ÷ 80 = 0.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 5, 50% is 25 and 100% is 50.
