How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Divide the part by it: 80 ÷ 0.2 = 400
- Check: Work forwards: 20% of 400 is 0.2 × 400 = 80.
Another method. As a proportion: 80/whole = 20/100, so whole = 80 × 100 ÷ 20 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80/20%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
80 is the 20% share of 400. The other 80% is 320.
Discounts: if 80 dollars is a 20% saving, the original price was $400.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 20% is 80, then 1% is 80 ÷ 20 = 4, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 40, 50% is 200 and 100% is 400.
