How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Divide the part by it: 90 ÷ 0.3 = 300
  3. Check: Work forwards: 30% of 300 is 0.3 × 300 = 90.

Another method. As a proportion: 90/whole = 30/100, so whole = 90 × 100 ÷ 30 = 300. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90/30%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

90 is the 30% share of 300. The other 70% is 210.

Discounts: if 90 dollars is a 30% saving, the original price was $300.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 30% is 90, then 1% is 90 ÷ 30 = 3, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 30, 50% is 150 and 100% is 300.
