How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Divide the part by it: 100 ÷ 0.25 = 400
  3. Check: Work forwards: 25% of 400 is 0.25 × 400 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion: 100/whole = 25/100, so whole = 100 × 100 ÷ 25 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/25%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

100 is the 25% share of 400. The other 75% is 300.

Discounts: if 100 dollars is a 25% saving, the original price was $400.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 25% is 100, then 1% is 100 ÷ 25 = 4, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 40, 50% is 200 and 100% is 400.
