How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Divide the part by it: 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100
  3. Check: Work forwards: 80% of 100 is 0.8 × 100 = 80.

Another method. As a proportion: 80/whole = 80/100, so whole = 80 × 100 ÷ 80 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80/80%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

80 is the 80% share of 100. The other 20% is 20.

Discounts: if 80 dollars is a 80% saving, the original price was $100.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 80% is 80, then 1% is 80 ÷ 80 = 1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 10, 50% is 50 and 100% is 100.
