How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 80 ÷ 0.1 = 800
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 800 is 0.1 × 800 = 80.
Another method. As a proportion: 80/whole = 10/100, so whole = 80 × 100 ÷ 10 = 800. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
80 is the 10% share of 800. The other 90% is 720.
Discounts: if 80 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $800.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 10% is 80, then 1% is 80 ÷ 10 = 8, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 80, 50% is 400 and 100% is 800.
