How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 5% of 50 = 0.05 × 50 = 2.5
- Take it off the price: 50 − 2.5 = 47.5
- Check: Add the saving back: 47.5 + 2.5 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 95% of the price, so 0.95 × 50 = 47.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-5%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 5% off, you pay 95% of the price: 47.5 instead of 50, a saving of 2.5.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 5% off costs $47.5 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
5% off followed by another 5% off is 9.75% off in total, not 10%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 5% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 5% off and then another 5% off leaves 45.13, not 45, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
