How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 20 = 0.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.2 ÷ 20 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/20, so part = 1 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.2 is the 1% share of 20. The remaining 99% is 19.8, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $20 saves $0.2, so you pay $19.8.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 20 by 1% gives 20.2 and decreasing it by 1% gives 19.8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 19.998, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 1. 1% of 20 and 20% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
