How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 50 = 0.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/50, so part = 1 × 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.5 is the 1% share of 50. The remaining 99% is 49.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $50 saves $0.5, so you pay $49.5.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 50 by 1% gives 50.5 and decreasing it by 1% gives 49.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 49.995, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
