How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 90 = 0.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.9 ÷ 90 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/90, so part = 1 × 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.9 is the 1% share of 90. The remaining 99% is 89.1, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $90 saves $0.9, so you pay $89.1.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 90 by 1% gives 90.9 and decreasing it by 1% gives 89.1. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 89.991, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
