How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1000 ÷ 100 = 10
  2. Multiply: 10 × 10 = 100
  3. Check: Work backwards: 100 ÷ 10 × 100 = 1000%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1000/100 = part/10, so part = 1000 × 10 ÷ 100 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1000%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 1000% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 10 times 10.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 1000% of its $10 cost means selling it for $100.

Adding and taking away 1000%

Increasing 10 by 1000% gives 110. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 1000% and then lowering the result by 1000% ends at -990, because the second 1000% is taken of a bigger number.
