How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 23 = 2.3
- Check: Work backwards: 2.3 ÷ 23 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/23, so part = 10 × 23 ÷ 100 = 2.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*23. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.3 is the 10% share of 23. The remaining 90% is 20.7, and the two parts add back up to 23.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $23 saves $2.3, so you pay $20.7.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 23 by 10% gives 25.3 and decreasing it by 10% gives 20.7. These do not cancel out: raising 23 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 22.77, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 23% of 10. 10% of 23 and 23% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 23 ÷ 100 = 2.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
