How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 10 = 2.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.3 ÷ 10 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/10, so part = 23 × 10 ÷ 100 = 2.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.3 is the 23% share of 10. The remaining 77% is 7.7, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $10 saves $2.3, so you pay $7.7.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 10 by 23% gives 12.3 and decreasing it by 23% gives 7.7. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 9.471, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
