How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 62 = 6.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.2 ÷ 62 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/62, so part = 10 × 62 ÷ 100 = 6.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*62. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.2 is the 10% share of 62. The remaining 90% is 55.8, and the two parts add back up to 62.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $62 saves $6.2, so you pay $55.8.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 62 by 10% gives 68.2 and decreasing it by 10% gives 55.8. These do not cancel out: raising 62 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 61.38, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
