How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 79 = 7.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.9 ÷ 79 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/79, so part = 10 × 79 ÷ 100 = 7.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*79. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.9 is the 10% share of 79. The remaining 90% is 71.1, and the two parts add back up to 79.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $79 saves $7.9, so you pay $71.1.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 79 by 10% gives 86.9 and decreasing it by 10% gives 71.1. These do not cancel out: raising 79 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 78.21, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
