How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 79 ÷ 100 = 0.79
  2. Multiply: 0.79 × 10 = 7.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 79%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 79/100 = part/10, so part = 79 × 10 ÷ 100 = 7.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
