How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 92 = 9.2
- Check: Work backwards: 9.2 ÷ 92 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/92, so part = 10 × 92 ÷ 100 = 9.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*92. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.2 is the 10% share of 92. The remaining 90% is 82.8, and the two parts add back up to 92.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $92 saves $9.2, so you pay $82.8.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 92 by 10% gives 101.2 and decreasing it by 10% gives 82.8. These do not cancel out: raising 92 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 91.08, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 92% of 10. 10% of 92 and 92% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 92 ÷ 100 = 9.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
