How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1000 ÷ 100 = 10
- Multiply: 10 × 100 = 1,000
- Check: Work backwards: 1,000 ÷ 100 × 100 = 1000%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1000/100 = part/100, so part = 1000 × 100 ÷ 100 = 1,000. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1000%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 1000% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 100: it is 10 times 100.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 1000% of its $100 cost means selling it for $1,000.
Adding and taking away 1000%
Increasing 100 by 1000% gives 1,100. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 1000% and then lowering the result by 1000% ends at -9,900, because the second 1000% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 1000. 1000% of 100 and 100% of 1000 are always equal (both are 1000 × 100 ÷ 100 = 1,000), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
