How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 20 = 2.6
- Check: Work backwards: 2.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/20, so part = 13 × 20 ÷ 100 = 2.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.6 is the 13% share of 20. The remaining 87% is 17.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $20 saves $2.6, so you pay $17.4.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 20 by 13% gives 22.6 and decreasing it by 13% gives 17.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 19.662, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 13. 13% of 20 and 20% of 13 are always equal (both are 13 × 20 ÷ 100 = 2.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
