How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 65 = 8.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.45 ÷ 65 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/65, so part = 13 × 65 ÷ 100 = 8.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.45 is the 13% share of 65. The remaining 87% is 56.55, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $65 saves $8.45, so you pay $56.55.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 65 by 13% gives 73.45 and decreasing it by 13% gives 56.55. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 63.9015, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
