How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 14 ÷ 100 = 0.14
- Multiply: 0.14 × 40 = 5.6
- Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 14%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/100 = part/40, so part = 14 × 40 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =14%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.6 is the 14% share of 40. The remaining 86% is 34.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 14% off an item priced $40 saves $5.6, so you pay $34.4.
Adding and taking away 14%
Increasing 40 by 14% gives 45.6 and decreasing it by 14% gives 34.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 14% and then lowering the result by 14% ends at 39.216, because the second 14% is taken of a bigger number.
