How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 43 = 6.45
- Check: Work backwards: 6.45 ÷ 43 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/43, so part = 15 × 43 ÷ 100 = 6.45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.45 is the 15% share of 43. The remaining 85% is 36.55, and the two parts add back up to 43.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $43 saves $6.45, so you pay $36.55.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 43 by 15% gives 49.45 and decreasing it by 15% gives 36.55. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 42.0325, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
